So What's Our Story?

Good question!  We're a bunch of ordinary people that decided in about the year 2001 to role up our sleeves and meet our homeless brothers and sisters living under bridges and in alleys; delivering food, water, clothing, rosaries, prayer cards, Bibles and compassion.  Check out our many inspirational movie-shorts for yourself, your church group, children or family on YouTube at Mercy Homeless Productions by clicking here!

Above, homeless living in the summer's 122 degree heat of California's, Palm Desert receive frozen water bottles, food, clothing, love, hugs and other urgent supplies from Vern Soto (blue shirt) a missionary of the Servants of the Father of Mercy, like Domino's, We Deliver! 

We formalized our outreach by becoming a Catholic community, Servants of the Father of Mercy.  However, Christians of all faiths are  invited to find a home on our team.

Our religious and lay brothers and sisters are coming to an intense awareness of our own "loser" status of failure and sin - but how great God the Father's mercy is toward us in Christ Jesus - thanks be to God!

We live a life in community focused on prayer, penance and mercy.  Our daily prayer life is built on rich devotions like the Divine Mercy and the Rosary as well as centered around the Eucharist and praying the Liturgy of the Hours.

Anniversary Celebration 2018!

Marie Foti (Photo 1 above - white dress) recently reminded friends on Facebook that 2018 is the 10th anniversary of the opening Mass of the Servants of the Father of Mercy. Peter Torsiello (Photo 1 above - awesome leader with the guitar) and music group were the worship team for the celebration. It was held at St. Peter's Italian Catholic Church, Chinatown, Los Angeles, January 26, 2008.

Present at the Mass were Myrna Emata (piano), along with 30 other musicians, singers and guests. (Photo 2 above - that is Westwood, Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Community's drummer, Joel Fischer on percussion.)

However, the first servants began helping the homeless in Los Angeles under the 3rd Street bridge in 2001. All-totaled, we now celebrate 16 years of the privilege of serving the poorest of the poor in Southern California.

EACH HOMELESS PERSON HAS A STORY!

Compassion tells us that each person is unique and certainly no one chooses to be homeless. Their stories are intricate, combining threads woven into tapestry of mental illness, self-medication, rejection, war, post-traumatic stress, physical abuse, psychological abuse, sexual abuse, secrets and shame.  Pray for Raul (above) and his dog. Both died homeless within a few weeks of each other in May of 2017.

A Tradition of Mercy

We come from a long tradition of mercy!  All of Scripture is a single story of God's great mercy to a world that often despises His great love, culminating at Calvary in the sacrificial death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Here are just a few of the Scriptures that have inspired our Servants of the Father of Mercy to go and be merciful to others:

 · Matthew 6:9 – The Lord’s Prayer – “Our Father who art in heaven …”

· Luke 15:11 – Jesus’ parable of the merciful Father and His prodigal son …

· Matthew 5:7 – The Beatitudes – “Blessed are the merciful …”

· James 2:13 – “Mercy triumphs over justice…”

· Matthew 9:13 – “Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’”

We also come from a long line of saints who have modeled God's mercy to us and how we are to share His mercy with others.  We are thankful for the rich examples we find in Saint Francis, Saint Vincent de Paul, Saint Padre Pio and Blessed Mother Teresa to mention a few.

For Diego and his little sister Rebecca it's pure joy to shout from the truck tops on skid row, "come and get your free water" as their dad, Enrique hands out food, clothing, water, rosaries, hygiene kits and other supplies to 80,000 + homeless men, women, teens and children in the region.

Join our "Youth & Family Team" for monthly events filled with crafts, good times, memories and outreaches to the the "homeless" old folks and sick residents living in area nursing facilities.
